"I was hesitant to try the Wim Hof Method alone, but in a guided class with Cody I felt a lot more comfortable with how to perform the breathing. We covered the science and the methods, and followed it all up with a five minute ice bath. My wife, who has a passionate hate of the cold, absolutely crushed 5 minutes in the ice. I have continued practicing daily before my workouts and it feels like it boosts my output and recovery times." Blaise B.
"Had a great experience and excited to put the techniques Cody taught into practice. The breathing and ice baths have been life changing!" -TJ Crawford
The Wim Hof Method
The Wim Hof method uses meditation techniques to clear the mind and create a relaxing atmosphere for oneself. The Method is said to make you happier, stronger and healthier within weeks. Developed by dutch extreme athlete Wim Hof, the Method includes a combination of breathing, cold therapy and commitment that offers a range of benefits. Hof has not only helped advance scientific understanding, but has also accomplished extraordinary feats of human endurance, including 21 Guinness World Records such as; running a half marathon above the Arctic Circle, barefoot only wearing shorts, swimming underneath ice for 66 meters and climbing the highest mountains in the world while wearing only shorts. He has also been used for a number of scientific experiments which have proven that with the use of this method people are able to control their sympathetic nervous system and immune response. This could mean that the Wim Hof Method is an effective tool to battle symptoms of various autoimmune diseases.
The method itself is based on 3 Powerful Pillars:
Cold therapy → Exposing one’s body to cold temperatures is one of the core pillars of the Wim Hof method. Cold body therapy is linked to numerous health benefits including faster metabolism, improved quality of sleep, reduction in inflammation and swelling as well as sore muscles. It is used by professional athletes, bodybuilders, and celebrities that swear by this practice. To practice at home you can start by just taking a cold shower and you will begin to notice the benefits immediately.
Breathing → Wim Hof has developed special breathing exertions that keep his body in optimal condition and in complete control in the most extreme conditions. The breathing technique is first and foremost premised on inhaling deeply and exhaling without any use of force. Benefits of this breathing method include releasing more energy and influencing your own nervous system to change various physiological responses. Wim Hof Method breathing is simple and easy. It is recommended practicing right after waking, or before a meal, when your stomach is still empty.
Step 1: Get comfortable by assuming a meditation posture. This can be sitting, lying down, whatever is most comfortable for you making sure that your lungs can move freely without feeling any constriction.
Step 2: Close your eyes and try to clear your mind. Be conscious of your breath, and try to fully connect with it. Inhale deeply through the nose or mouth, and exhale unforced through the mouth. Fully inhale through the belly, then chest and then let go unforced. Repeat this 30 to 40 times in short, powerful bursts. You may experience light-headedness, and tingling sensations in your fingers and feet. These side effects are completely harmless.
Step 3: After the last exhalation, inhale one final time, as deeply as you can. Then let the air out and stop breathing. Hold until you feel the urge to breathe again.
When you feel the urge to breathe again, draw one big breath to fill your lungs. Feel your belly and chest expanding. When you are at full capacity, hold the breath for around 15 seconds, then let go. That completes round number one. This cycle can be repeated 3-4 times without interval. After having completed the breathing exercise, take your time to bask in the bliss. This calm state is highly conducive to meditation — don't hesitate to combine the two.
Commitment → Willpower and self-control are very important factors for a successful and happy life. Most people are trying to become the best version of themselves. But if you really want to become a better version of yourself, then increasing willpower is one of the most essential things to do. The Wim Hof method says that willpower can be trained by practicing the scientifically underpinned method. Benefits of controlling willpower include increased self control, improved focus and becoming more self aware.
Once you develop a solid understanding of these basic principles and continue to practice them habitually, you will see an increase in your day to day health and life.
